-always smiling (they like their job)
-having fun with kids
-one counselor per group of kids (1:5-ish ratio)
Themes from Videos:
-counselors are either a fun friend, or the bad guy (goofy or strict, never both)
-most are boys
-counselors are in charge of giving kids boundaries/rules
Themes found in Both:
-comfortable clothes! :)
-camp is outdoors (trees, campfires, cabins, etc)
-camper is the most important part of camp
Its interesting to note that most videos of camp counselors are boys. My previous experience in camps was that there were always more females applying to be counselors as opposed to male counselors. It is interesting to see the reverse in terms of how the media portrays camp counselors.
ReplyDeleteA camp counselor.. boy or girl? I agree with Clement that females seemed to be vying for counselor positions more often than males in the past years. However, one of my friends is a camp counselor at Pine Cove, and he is a boy. I believe that this role was previously dominated by women, similar to a teaching career. While teachers are still primarily women, like camp counselors, men are attempting to reverse the playing field and take on what used to be a "woman's job." Perhaps we'll call it "reverse feminism."
